Newly promoted Ponte Preta condemned defending champions Corinthians to their fourth loss of the season in Brazil Serie A action on Sunday.
A goal three minutes before half time from Ponte Preta striker Andre Luis separated the two sides and left Corinthians winless at the
bottom of the table.
Ponte Preta are now unbeaten in their last four outings and travel to fourth-placed Botafogo next Sunday, while Corinthians play host to fellow strugglers Santos, who conceded an 88th minute penalty to lose 1-0 at
Flamengo.
In other Sunday results, a solitary goal from former Brazilian international Luis Fabiano was enough for Sao Paulo to beat
third-placed Atletico Mineiro.
Bahia won their first game of the season, prevailing 2-1
against Sport Recife at the Estadio de Pituacu.
Elias put the home side ahead on 12 minutes before Bruno Aguiar equalised for Sport Recife in the 70th minute but a Fahel goal four
minutes from time earned maximum points for Bahia.
Meanwhile, Coritiba comfortably accounted for struggling Atletico GO 3-0, Nautico left it till the second minute of added time to register a 1-0 win at the expense of Gremio, and Vasco da Gama held Palmeiras
to a 1-1 draw.
