Ghana midfielder Anthony Annan says he is focused on helping Ghana win the Africa Cup of Nations despite the death of his mother on Thursday.

Annan's mother, Sophia Sampson, passed away after a short illness but rather than return home, the Vitesse man has vowed to stay on in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea to help his side in their quest for a fifth Africa Cup of Nations title.

"I am saddened by the death of my mother but I am still focused and committed to going out there to play for my nation and help win the Africa Cup of Nations title," the 25-year-old said.

"Winning the title would serve as a big honour in memory of my mother."

Ghana will play Tunisia in a quarter-final in Franceville on Sunday.

The Ghana side will sport black armbands in memory of Annan's mother, while Tunisia will also be wearing black armbands to commemorate the 74 victims of the recent football riot in Egypt.
