CFR Cluj have become the first team from outside Bucharest to be crowned Liga 1 champions in 17 years after ending the season one point ahead of FC Steaua Bucureºti.
With Steaua trailing CFR by a point going into today's matches, the capital club needed Cluj to come unstuck in their derby at FC Universitatea Cluj to have any chance of leapfrogging the leaders.
However, CFR won 1-0 thanks to a 65th-minute penalty from captain Cadú to secure the first championship in their 101-year history. The result also rendered Steaua's 5-0 defeat of FC Gloria Buzãu irrelevant.
