MADRID (AFP) - Belarussian midfielder Alexander Hleb arrived in Barcelona on Wednesday for a medical checkup ahead of his expected transfer from Arsenal, the club said.

"If he passes the medical tests, Alexander Hleb will be presented at the Nou Camp later today," the club said on its website.

"I love this club," Hleb told reporters. "I spoke with (coach Josep) Guardiola and it's good to know that he wants me. I will give my best to this team and I want to win everything with Barca."

The Belarussian, who joined Arsenal from VfB Stuttgart in 2005, scored only 10 goals in his three seasons at the London side.

Hleb, who had also been linked with a move to Italian champions Inter Milan, said during an interview in Russia last week that he had told Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that he did not like living in London and wanted to leave the club.

The 27-year-old would be Barca's fifth signing for the 2008-2009 season.

The club has already signed Mali's midfielder Seydou Keita from Seville and three defenders: Spaniard Gerard Pique from Manchester United, Uruguayan Martin Caceres from Villarreal and Brazilian Daniel Alves from Seville.

A nice buy. Barca have now arguably the best defence and midfield in La Liga but up front there's no one, provided Etoo leaves. Have they signed Berbatov they would have been unstoppable.

Still, everyone knows that good defense beats good offense.

ajax72 July 16th, 2008 16:08

Not everyone. Some ppl know that the best defence is the offence.

too many good players in mid field can be problematic at times. hope it works!

Guuner66 July 16th, 2008 16:47

i think people are under estimating this team. they will be fine and surprise a lot of people.

Barcelona winning La Liga is hardly surprising...they're expected to every year, just like Real Madrid!

chakal July 16th, 2008 17:05

does any one know when was the last time Real won la liga 3 times in a row!!! just a heads up!!

Crusader1987 July 16th, 2008 17:43

Real Madrid last won three La Liga titles in a row in 1990 (they won the 1987-88, 1988-89, and 1989-90 titles). Actually, 1989-90 marked the fifth consecutive La Liga title that Real Madrid won. They won titles in 1985-86 and 1986-87 as well.

I bet real is on a title winning streak, but this year if we have to win just one title, i chose the Champions!! How about that?

cameroon July 16th, 2008 19:37

i think we now have a good midfield set up, but am not sure up front, i do not think the coach would be able to make up if Eto,o should live, henry and Bojan? am not sure,

wha is Arsenal doing, lossing two world class midfields in a season, what are they up to, lets wait and see.

Guuner66 July 16th, 2008 20:06

arsenal will be fine. they always find a way to find some top class young kid they got for peanuts. wenger is amazing at doing that.

ajax72 July 16th, 2008 21:16

No one wants to play for a team that doesn't even come close to winning any trophy. Just like Ajax in the last years-an incubator for future stars that end up shining in other teams.
