MADRID (AFP) - Former England captain David Beckham claimed on Sunday that his ex-Real Madrid team-mate Zinedine Zidane is the best player of all time.

The 33-year-old Englishman told sports daily Marca that it had been a dream come true to play alongside Zidane for three years at Real.

"To train with Zidane for three years (2003-06) was a dream," confessed Beckham, who has been capped over 100 times by his country.

"For me he is the greatest player of all time."

Beckham, who is now playing for Los Angeles Galaxy, also believed that the best Spanish player at the moment is Barcelona's playmaker Xavi, who inspired Spain to the Euro 2008 title last month and was judged player of the tournament.

However, Beckham also thinks that goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who he knows from his time at Real, should be awarded world player of the year after several outstanding performances at the Euro.

Beckham also denied he wished to become an actor even though he is living in Hollywood but that he would like to return to Madrid - where he still has a house - one day and work with the youth side at Real.

I've seen so many soccer players in my life and I believe the best ever was Alfredo Di Stefano from Argentina. He played most of his illustrious career with Real Madrid. Any objections?

Crusader1987 July 13rd, 2008 15:38

You can go in so many different directions on a question like this in almost any sport. I haven't been watching soccer long enough to see many of the greats. I'm going to go with Pele. His influence on the USA is seen today in a strong US men's team and he was one of the best back when he played.

samerkq77 July 13rd, 2008 15:39

Ithink the best player ever is Maradona, and i don't think there is any comparison between any player and maradona. maradona was the only player to lead his national team and his team (Napoli) to wining trophies without the help of anyother player, he was the only start in those teams

Tontodonati July 13rd, 2008 16:50

Samerkq77, Maradona is a lost kid. A player has to be a role model beside being good on the field in order to be the very best in the world. Maradona was neither!

Crusader1987 July 13rd, 2008 16:57

But Pele was and still is both. He was a prolific goal scorer and is now FIFA's soccer ambassador to the world. If that isn't a good role model, I don't know what is.

I would say Zidane is also a good role model, but I would suggest that the kids not copy his infamous incident. Other than that, he was a first class player.

if any of you guys started watching zidane play soccer in his early stages, watching him grow wasnt only one thing extraordinary, you can name a number of things great about him...footwork, rolemodel, and great leadership
ovecourse like any other footballer he made mistakes, but zidane played every game as if it were his last, he didnt stop trying because he had enough money, like ronaldinho, pele, maradona
zidane is the true football player that never gave up and that was the beast on the field, and thats just a couple of reasons of why he was the best of all time

i just wish i could see him play live again for real madrid

Tontodonati July 13rd, 2008 20:04

Didishmon, It's unfortunate that you never seen Alfredo Di Stefano in action and, by the way, he never head-butted anybody. Just ask F. Puskas. Well, you can't ask him. He passed away a few month ago!

FManiac24 July 13rd, 2008 20:10

I agree with Becks here! Zidane is the best ever, and Cassilas the best keeper now and seeing his games for Real Madrid and on Euro '08, he would be a good choice for player of the year!

ajax72 July 13rd, 2008 20:33

Zidane can't hold a candel even to Platini, let alone Pele, Maradona, Cruijff, MvBasten, Di Stefano. Becks has spent more time in beauty parlors and boutiques than watching football, so he has no say in this.

RGPII1 July 13rd, 2008 20:51

Cruyff, Puskas, there are many more than the 3 always mentioned, well the two mainly mentioned, Pele and Maradona. Now people talk of Zidane too.

And these are just naming some attackers...there are defenders and goalkeepers as well such Lev Yashin and others.

ahmedabdo July 13rd, 2008 21:14

@RPGII1
i'd like to add players like Beckenpaur, Maldini, Zoff... and the list just goes on...

NakedWake July 14th, 2008 01:39

I'm also going to say Pele is the greatest ever. He never played as though he had too much money. His one problem was that he was so susceptible to injury. He was light years ahead of anyone during his time. I think guys like Giorgio Chinaglia and Franz Beckenbauer also deserve a nod. When Giorgio came to the U.S. he dominated NASL. I think he's the highest scoring player to play for a US soccer team.

BesTalentScout July 14th, 2008 06:41

what nonsense ! it's just like saying Beckham is the best ever winger !

besides, Beckham will change his mind once he sees me play................what Zidane can do with a ball........i can do with an egg........!

RGPII1 July 14th, 2008 07:30

Well, we all know Freddy Adu is the best ever: but Zidane is up there too!

RGPII1 July 14th, 2008 07:31

Maradona may have acted like a kid; but to an extent, I'll give him a break as Argentina may have had big troubles back when he grew up. Not meaning to make mistakes but it might be so.

gunner_eagle July 14th, 2008 10:23

The names that my dad used to say often were Pele, Garrincha, Didi, Vava, Puskas, Eusebio, Yashin, Beckenbauer, Breitner, and Cruyff. It's interesting that he never ever mentioned Di Stefano and the famous English players in the 60s (Charlton, Banks etc). I never heard him say something about Maradona or Zidane either. I think the last time he said something really good about a player was with Platini and Zico. I think after Mexico 1986 soccer died for him somehow. But his role model must have been Garrincha, because when he told how Garrincha played, his eyes were laughing :)

gunner_eagle July 14th, 2008 10:37

It's impossible for me to know the players before 1978, I was too young at that time. But when I consider the players that I had a chance to see, then I am definately in favor of Maradona for best player ever. Some names that have always exited me or have sounded solid to me are: Van Basten, Davids, Matthaeus, Klinsmann, Gullit, Rijkaard, Maldini, Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Stoichkov, Giggs, Koeman, Sammer, Augenthaler. Today I would like to add Zidane, Pirlo and Buffon to this list.

Ardiles too.

gunner_eagle July 14th, 2008 13:05

RPGII,
Ardiles was on my mind, but I think while I wrote the names his went off my mind... a wonderful player, he definately deserves to be in the list... actually a perfect trio once was Magath-Keegan-Kaltz (later on Hrubesch replacing Keegan) They had some glorious games, including the Champions Cup in 1983 with Magath scoring the only goal.

BesTalentScout July 14th, 2008 13:08

Tonto,

how can i be only number 4 ??????? LOL

gunner_eagle July 14th, 2008 13:09

Fred, you should make it at least 11 players, so that we have a team ;)))... and with shirt Nr.1, it means you'll be the goal keeper! But I remember you said you were an attacking midfielder. Don't you want to be Nr. 10 in that case?? :D

gunner_eagle July 14th, 2008 13:10

TalentScount,

you will be number one if you can do all the things with four eggs at one time :))

Tontodonati July 14th, 2008 13:56

OK, guys, you convinced me. We now have a team.
