Non-leaguers Havant and Waterlooville in FA Cup wonderland

LONDON (AFP) - Those who argue that the romance of the FA Cup is dead were having a hard time convincing Shaun Gale, the manager of non-league minnows Havant and Waterlooville, on Thursday.
By his own admission, the lifelong Liverpool fan was still in something of a daze after waking up to the knowledge that his collection of taxi-drivers and teachers had booked a fourth round trip to face his heroes at Anfield. The part-timers are the only non-league outfit left in the competition and nobody can accuse them of having scrapped their way into the last 32 given how comprehensively they outplayed League One leaders Swansea in a 4-2 victory on Wednesday evening. "It is unbelievable, dream stuff," said Gale. "I would not have believed this would have ever happened a couple of months ago but that's football." An own goal by Gary Monk gave the Conference South side an early advantage and goals by Rocky Baptiste and skipper Jamie Collins put them in control against Swansea. But they had to come through a test of nerve when Guillem Bauza and Jason Scotland reduced the deficit to a single goal, before Tom Jordan -- the son of Scots legend Joe -- finally made sure of victory. "We have turned the dream into reality," said a delighted Gale. "I wanted focus from my team and they showed me that all over the pitch." Swansea, whose manager Roberto Martinez refused to speak to the media, paid the price for underestimating a side from the joint sixth tier of English football -- 83 places below them in the hierarchy. Gale added: "Swansea played their strongest side but they underestimated us. We worked on our set pieces and they could not handle them. "We could have folded after they got their second goal but we dug deep." Gale is not the only Liverpool fan on the Havant staff. Striker Baptiste, who scored an 87th-minute equaliser in the first tie, is also a Reds supporter. "It's going to be an amazing feeling going to Liverpool and seeing Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres and playing on the Anfield pitch," he said. |
