CARSON, California (AFP) - Ruud Gullit resigned on Monday as coach of the struggling Los Angeles Galaxy who also fired general manager Alexi Lalas.

Los Angeles are in the midst of a seven-game winless streak (0-4-3) despite having a healthy David Beckman in the lineup.

Los Angeles were expected to contend for the Major League Soccer title this year but are fourth in the Western Conference with a 6-8-5 record.

Gullit cited "personal reasons" in his decision to resign.

"Both parties have agreed on mutually agreeable terms to part company," said Tim Leiweke, president of the AEG Group that owns the Galaxy.

"It is an amicable arrangement and we appreciate and respect the issues that Ruud has highlighted with the club and are very grateful for all the hard work he has contributed while with the organization. Hopefully, he has laid the foundations for future success for the Los Angeles Galaxy," Leiweke said.

Los Angeles could have waited until Lalas' contract expired at the end of the season but they chose to have him follow Gullit out the door.

"With Ruud moving on, we believe that this is the right time to make more sweeping changes throughout the organization," Leiweke added.

Gullit took over as Galaxy coach in the offseason following the departure of Frank Yallop to the San Jose Earthquakes.

The former Holland international brought with him solid credentials as the former Newcastle and Feyenoord coach, but failed to turn around the fortunes of the Galaxy. He will replaced on an interim basis by assistant coach Cobi Jones.

Lalas joined the Galaxy's front office from New York in 2006 after playing for the Galaxy from 2001 to 2003.

First thing tomorrow kick Becks, an expired manure product, out. Then look for a real coach. How can someone in his right mind hire a looser coach like Gullit beats me. Don't they read papers in the West Coast?

ajax

you know the Americans...............entertainment value for the press is more important than results........

phughes699 August 12nd, 2008 06:52

They need someone of the stature of Alex Ferguson to turn them around and show them the winning ways in soccer.

Tontodonati August 12nd, 2008 11:35

Bes TalentScout, if entertainment was more important than results, then LAGalaxy would have kept both Gullit and Lalas! What they need is a number of good players, something not easy to find.
phughes, even Sir Alex would not fare better than Gullit with the team the Galaxy have.

BesTalent - Tonto is right, your post is very out of place considering the focus on the article. I cant beleive he resigned...Lalas quit, that was 90% of the problem. HORRIBLE GM. LA needs a new back line and they would be a good team. Their offense in great and the best in the league, but their D and GK are the worse...

i wonder if there was a bet going on that if the USA tied or beat the Neatherlands in the Olympics, he would step down. haha

Onelove, that's exactly right... And good point, Tonto.
I support the Galaxy over the rest of MLS, mainly due to their interim coach (and player not so long ago). The Galaxy need some solid defenders, because the offense has put up 38 goals (as of today), which is 11 more than the second best offense in the West, and 7 more than the best in the East...unfortunately they've given up 40...
If the Galaxy can start defending, then they can win the MLS Cup.

yeah, and they can afford to get new defenders. they can keep Franklin though. but seriously, they released xavier who was taking up a lot of cap space. if they release Vanney, Ruiz, Pires, and Pete V. they suddenly have a 1/3rd of their salary cap back. They need some serious defensive revamping.
