ESSEN, Sep 10 (SW) –German title favourites Turbine Potsdam have lost their season opener against Essen-Schönebeck. The Essen women came back from a 1-2 deficit to win it 3-2.
The women from Essen took the early lead when Stephanie Weichelt scored the 1-0. An Isabel Kerschowski penalty made it level just before the break. Turbine went in front with national-team player Conny Pohlers scoring 1-2 in the 58th minute. But ten minutes later a Stephanie Weichelt shot that was deflected by Turbine defender Inken Becher equalized the match. As if the 2-2 wasn't enough, Essen pulled out the win eighteen minutes before the end when Charline Hartmann made it 3-2. With main rivals FFC Frankfurt and FCR Duisburg both winning their games, Turbine starts with three points behind. Essen-Schönebeck is always a difficult hurdle for the women from Potsdam to take. Last year Turbine needed a penalty shoot-out to avoid a cup defeat in Essen. SG Essen-Schönebeck – Turbine Potsdam (1-1) 3-2 Attendance: 2,133 Goals: 13. Stephanie Weichelt 1-0, 45. Isabel Kerschowski (penalty) 1-1, 58. Conny Pohlers 1-2, 64. Inken Becher (own goal) 2-2, 72. Charline Hartmann 3-2. |
