CORK, Jul 13 (SW) - Eircom League champions Cork City FC got their UEFA Champions League campaign off a winning start with victory over Apollon Limassol at Turner's Cross in the first leg of the first qualifying round.
Cork City - Apollon Limassol 1-0 Despite playing without influential playmaker George O'Callaghan, Cork battled hard and took a deserved lead over their Cypriot counterparts as midfielder Billy Woods struck in the 62nd minute. Apollon, who boast dynamic Polish striker Lukasz Sosin, will need a better result at home if they intend to face Serbian champions Crvena Zvezda in the second qualifying round. MyPa - TNS 1-0 Myllykoskenpallo-47, better known as MyPa, claimed a narrow home victory over League of Wales champions The New Saints FC on Wednesday. A goal two minutes before the hour mark slid in by Brazilian forward Adriano lifted the Finnish domestic champions to the victory ahead of next week's second leg tie at Latham Park in Newtown. The winner of the tie will play in the second qualifying round against FC København of Denmark. Liepajas Metalurgs - Aktobe 1-0 Latvian champions Liepajas Metalurgs got an early goal on Wednesday to see off the challenge of Kazakhstan's Aktobe in their first-leg match. Lithuanian midfielder Tomas Tamosauskas grabbed the winning strike after a quarter-hour had been played in Liepaja, setting up a tense second leg in Kazakhstan next week. The winner will move on to play Dynamo Kiev. Shakhtior Soligorsk - Siroki Brijeg 0-1 Siroki Brijeg took the initiative in their first qualifying round tie on Tuesday, getting a big win away to Belarus' Shakhtior Soligorsk in the first leg. Ivan Bubalo's goal in the 28th minute gave Bosnia-Herzegovina's champions got a massive away goal and victory before next week's return leg. The winner will have a difficult tie in the second qualifying round, matched up with upstart Scottish side Hearts. |
