NANCY, Sep 28 (SW) - It was not a pleasant day for German football in the UEFA Cup as both Schalke and Hertha Berlin failed to qualify for the group stage, but Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayer Leverksen managed to get through.

Nancy - Schalke 3-1
Nancy advance 3-2 on aggregate
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, French League Cup winners Nancy pulled themselves level in the 18th as André Luiz deflected a header by Sebastien Puygrenier into the net, and Gaston Curbelo made it 2-0 on the night just seven minutes later.

Issiar Dia gave Nancy a larger cushion in the 70th minute that came in handy when Marcelo Bordon pulled a goal back for Schalke, but they couldn't get the one they needed to survive.

OB Odense - Hertha Berlin 1-0
OB Odense advance 3-2 on aggregate
Riding the back of a strong performance in the Germany capital a fortnight ago, OB Odense - who knocked Real Madrid out of the 1994 UEFA Cup - had an away goals advantage going into the home leg of their tie with Hertha.

The Germans had a couple of chances to go in front, but Mads Timm struck home a free kick in the 62nd minute to put the Danish side in front and they moved through to Tuesday's draw.

Brøndby - Eintracht Frankfurt 2-2
Eintracht Frankfurt advance 6-2 on aggregate
Brøndby couldn't recover from a disastrous first leg, allowing Eintracht Frankfurt to comfortably advance to the group stage.

Aleksandar Vasoski actually put the visitors in front after just seven minutes before Martin Ericsson finally put the Danes on the scoreboard on 20 minutes.

Vesoski put Frankfurt back in front with his second goal on 52 minutes before Morten Rasmusen equalized in the 66th minute in front of a disappointed home crowd.

Bayer Leverkusen - Sion 3-1
Bayer Leverkusen advance 3-1 on aggregate
After over 150 minutes of scoreless football, a dramatic last half-hour saw Bayer Leverkusen edge past Swiss side Sion at the BayArena.

Ukraine international Andriy Voronin broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute to put Leverkusen in front, but the Swiss responded with a big away goal from Gelson Fernandes that put them ahead in the tie 12 minutes later.

But former German international Carsten Ramelow put the Germans back in front in the 76th minute to end the Sion fightback and put the home side through.

After Sion had Virgile Reset and Kali sent off in the last 10 minutes, Bernd Schneider slotted a penalty to separate the sides further in the 86th minute.
