No less than nine goals were scored in a crazy match at Bremen's Weserstadion, where Werder got one more than TSG Hoffenheim to take the win.
The home side took the lead through Özil in the 8th minute but Ba equalized seven minutes later. After another minute though, Pizarro made it 2-1 after preparing work from Rosenberg.
Werder then extended their lead through Diego (21st) and Hunt (30th) and the 4-1 score had the hosts almost certain of victory.
But Hoffenheim then began an almost impossible comeback. Salihovic netted the 4-2 in the 36th minute and Ibisevic converted a penalty kick just after the hour mark. Per Mertesacker had been sent off for the foul that caused the spot kick.
Compper silenced the home crowd with a 71st minute header to make it 4-4.
But TSG's efforts would not get the award they deserved, as Özil saved the best for last, scoring for 5-4 in the 81st minute.
